(The melancholy) of my family
Although it may look like any family album at first glance, it’s much more to me. A hypothesis to what’s truly underneath. An attempt to capture the feelings that are hidden within.
Originally from Costa Rica, we moved as a family to Canada when I was 13 years old. After living together in Canada for 10 years, I left on my own to Japan.
When emigrating to another country, staying together as a family becomes an important thing to survive. Cracked after my separation, I wondered how they would cope with my absence. Would they be able to survive? Being the one who got along the best with each person in the family. I felt guilt for leaving, and I still do.
As I look upon my family, I feel some kind of melancholy in the atmosphere. However, I don’t know if it’s truly there.
Hidden within these photos, you may be able to see what I see. However, it remains to be known whether that melancholy is there captured alongside my family, or whether I’m projecting it onto them.
